The final consolation rounds and the championship finals were the order of business for Nebraska City and Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca wrestlers Saturday at the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships at the Omaha Qwest Center.

Action began with consolation semifinal round action Saturday morning.

At 119 pounds Nebraska City’s Blake Kennell took a 1-0 overtime decision from S-D-A grappler Quentin Danner.

Rocket Jacob Manley, 145, defeated Lee Henning of Gretna, 4-1.

Nathan Kimbell, S-D-A, 152, accepted a win by forfeit.

Myles Butt of Central City beat Nebraska City’s Christopher Meredith, 3-2.

Those results set up medal round matches, which followed directly after the consolation semifinals. Wrestlers who won a consolation semifinal match advanced to wrestle in the third and fourth place match, while those who fell in the consolation semifinals fell to the match for fifth and sixth.

Danner won by forfeit and took a fifth place medal. Meredith topped Richard Coats of Adams Central, 4-0, also for a fifth place medal.

Kennell lost to Jesse Browne of Plattsmouth, 2-0, and went home with a fourth place medal. Manley lost 11-0 to Nick Lonowski of Adams Central and finished fourth. Jerry Lobeda of Aurora beat Kimbell, 6-0, leaving the Rocket with a fourth place medal.

Championship finals action had two Rockets wrestling for championships Saturday afternoon.

Ben Lierman won the Class B 171-pound state championship by defeating Auburn’s Travis Cole by overtime pin. Derek Rowe, 140, finished as a state runner up in a 9-4 loss to Timothy Chavez of Omaha Skutt Catholic, who recorded the second state championship of his career.

Team standings had the Rockets as the Class B state runner up with 101 points. Skutt won its 11th straight state title with 256 points. Finishing third behind the Rockets was Auburn, 86. Boys Town and Central City followed with 83 each and Beatrice had 81.

The Rockets wrapped up a season in which they won all but one of their duals and finished first in every tourney of the campaign, save for the second place state finish.
