A pair of Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca golfers shot state qualifying numbers on the windy district course at the Beatrice Country Club on Monday.

Freshman Timmy Jensen posted the top score of the first nine holes at the tourney with a 39 and ended up with a runner up finish and an 83 for 18 holes, just two strokes behind district champion Dylan Heng, who hit an 81 to lead Nebraska City.

“Tim did an excellent job,” Coach Stan Hendricks said. “Going under 40 on the front nine really gave him confidence as he made the turn.

“While the wind greatly affected all golfers, Tim kept his short game steady and chipped and putted well to post his 83,” Hendricks said.

Senior Will Juilfs was second on the Rocket team and ninth in the overall standings with an 89.

“Will has been our most consistent golfer all year,” Coach Hendricks said. “He parred the first four holes on the backside and that really set him up to finish with a solid round.”

Looking at the team scores from Monday, the Rockets were fourth with a 367.

Nebraska City won the tourney with a 349, while Gretna was second, 356, and Beatrice was third, 361.

There were 12 full teams on the final leaderboard.
