Rockets set for districts

Track teams from Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School completed the regular season schedule by competing at the Johnson County Central Invite at Tecumseh last

week.

The Rocket boys’ team scored 144 points, easily topping second place Louisville’s 88 points.

Other teams on the boys’ side were Wilber-Clatonia, 65; Weeping Water, 52; Elmwood-Murdock, 46; Falls City Sacred Heart, 35; Palmyra, 30; Southern, 26; Conestoga, 16; Johnson County Central, 15; and Lincoln Southwest junior varsity, 10.

A 100-point effort by the S-D-A girls’ team came within two points of first place Wilber Clatonia.

Johnson County Central had 74.83 points to take third at the meet.

Other teams in the field included Falls City Sacred Heart, 63.83; Weeping Water, 63; Elmwood-Murdock, 62; Louisville, 27; Palmyra, 11; Conestoga, 11; Southern, 7; and Lincoln Southwest junior varsity, 5.3.

The Rocket boys’ and girls’ teams will return to the track for the district meet Thursday, May 8, at Plattsmouth.

Field events begin at 10 a.m. and track events follow at 1 p.m.

Aside from the Rockets, teams attending the district meet at Plattsmouth include Ashland-Greenwood, Auburn, Conestoga, Falls City, Gretna, Nebraska City, Norris, Platteview, Plattsmouth, and Waverly.

Boys’ results

A rush of eight gold medals paved the way for the Rocket boys’ track team at the Johnson County Central Invite last Friday.

Two of the golds came in the relay races as the Rockets were first in the 3200 meters, 8:46.1, and 400, 46.2.

The team earned second place in the 1600 meter race, 3:41.4.

Grant Aden and Andy Neels led the way with two first place finishes each.

Aden was first in the 1600 meters, 4:45.2, and 3200 meters, 10:10.8. Neels was first in the 300 meter hurdles, 42.1, and 110 meter hurdles, 16.1.

Thomas Volkmer and Kody Rich had gold medal finishes in the field. Rich was first in the vault, 12’, and Volkmer threw 54’2” for first in the shot. Volkmer was also second in the discus, 149’7”.

Rockets earning second place medals were Jake Welter, 100 meters, 11.4; and 200, 23.5; Lance Wolken, 800 meters, 2:06.7; and Chris Rosburg, vault, 11’.

Other medalists were Preston Kellum, fifth, 110 meter hurdles, 17.0; Ryan Callahan, fourth, 3200 meters, 11:00, and third , 1600 meters, 5:08.1; Garrett Sand, sixth, 800 meters, 2:16.5; Scott Wiebusch, sixth, shot, 44’10.5; and Brett Copley, fifth, discus, 128’6.5”.

Girls’ results

Event winners from the Johnson County Invite included the 1600 meter relay team, which ran a time of 4:26.5, and Alex Landwehr, who threw for first place in the shot, 38’5”.

Other individual Rocket results were unavailable at the time of press on Tuesday.

Qualifying standards

In order to make the state meet, Rocket athletes will need to finish in the top three of any field event or the top four of any running event.

The top two relay times will also advance to state.

Field event performances which meet qualifying standards will make state regardless of placing.

Boys’ field event qualifying standards are high jump, 6’3”; long jump, 21’3”; triple jump, 43’6”; shot, 52’3”; discus, 148’5”; and vault, 13’7”.

Girls’ field event qualifying standards are high jump, 5’2”; long jump, 16’10”; triple jump, 35’3”; shot, 38’11”; discus, 118’4”; and vault, 9’6”.
