Three-over-par would be good enough to lead most teams.
For Nebraska City, which set a school record for a nine hole round Monday, that was the score to throw out.
The Pioneers set the new nine hole record at 144 and cruised to a win on the Auburn Country Club course. Auburn shot 160.
Leading the Pioneers was Dylan Heng, who shot a one-under-par 34.
Coach Scott Kinnison said Heng was on his game from the start of the Monday round. He opened with back-to-back birdies and carried the momentum throughout.
John Rakes was second on the scoring list with a 36 while Dan Fountain and Clayton Rakes both shot 37 for the event.
Colton Pinney’s score of 38 wasn’t used on the team score.
That’s not to say that Pinney didn’t have a role in the Pioneers’ school record effort.
Coach Kinnison said all of the players went to Auburn with a goal in mind and all played a role in getting that goal accomplished.
“I think they kind of fed off each other,” Coach Kinnison said.
All the players were matching scores against one another, particularly the Pioneer players grouped together at the Auburn meet.
“They put a lot of pressure on themselves to score,” Coach Kinnison said.
With the win, the Nebraska City team raised its dual record to 3-0.
The Pioneers can improve that number by two at a rescheduled triangular at Glenwood.
Nebraska City is making up the triangular at 4 p.m. May 1, against Glenwood and Plattsmouth.
On the more immediate schedule, the Pioneers are scheduled to play at 9 a.m. Friday at the Crete Invitational and will travel to play Saturday at the Sidney Invite.
Match time at Sidney is also 9 a.m.
Reserves
Sam Sullivan and Matt McLaughlin led the Pioneer reserves to victory at Auburn Monday. Both hit for 45s.
The reserves shot 187 as a team, compared to 203 by Auburn.
