Dorothy E. Melchert, 85, of Manchester, Iowa, died Nov. 25, 2007 at Regional Medical Center in Manchester. She was born June 4, 1922 at Columbus to Howard T. and Leona P. (Horton) Sheets. She married Robert E. Melchert in Nebraska City on Oct. 14, 1945.
She is survived by daughter Sandra A. Melchert (120 Woodland Dr., Manchester, IA 52057); many cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert on Aug. 30, 1988; brother Thomas L. Sheets; and sister Margaret H. Sheets.
She lived in Columbus, Nebraska City; Red Oak and Woodbine, Iowa; and San Diego, Calif.
Dorothy was an apartment owner and had previously served as executive director of the Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce and was long time executive director of the Greater Nebraska Science and Engineering Fair. She had also worked in many offices of the Otoe County Courthouse prior to her retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Queen Esther Chapter No. 1, O.E.S. and American Legion Auxiliary, all of Nebraska City; and Daughters Of The Nile and Lady Shriners Shaaru Court No. 37 in San Diego.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Rev. Jeff Kelley of the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitations.
A memorial fund has been established.
