James Boardman

James Boardman, 96, Nebraska City, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City. The son of Rachael (Ervin) and Charles Boardman, was born Feb. 11, 1912 in Hartington. He married Dorothea Hobbie on Aug. 8, 1938, in Tecumseh.

He grew up on farms in eastern Nebraska. He attended grade school at Sciodia east of Union.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945, he returned to farming in Plattsmouth. He moved to his last farm north of Union in 1959 and retired from farming in 1974.

He enjoyed traveling to reunions of the 717th Tank Battalion from World War II and conferences with the Cass County Rural Water Association, which he helped organize in 1972. He was a member of the Plattsmouth Masonic Lodge and the Nebraska City American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Ronald Boardman; granddaughter Cheryl Boardman; brother Shelby; and sisters Charlotte Golf, Edith Buterbaugh and Rachel Egelston.

He is survived by wife Dorothea of Nebraska City; daughters Rheda Boardman of Bellarre, Texas, and Susan Cropp and husband Charles of Burr; sons Larry Boardman and wife Marilyn of Nebraska City, Robert Boardman and wife Bethene of Peru, Iowa, and Dan Boardman of Albuquerque, N.M.; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Shirley Boardman of Lincoln; sister Frieda Coufal of Nebraska City; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Viewing and visitation will start on Friday, May 2 at 2 p.m. with the family greeting family and friends from 6-8 p.m. at Peterson Mortuary Chapel.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 10:30 a.m. at Peterson Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at the East Union Cemetery near Union. Honorary and active casket bearers with be James’s grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials to Hospice of Tabitha, the M. S Foundation, American Heart Association or choice of donor.

Peterson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
