Elmer E. Castan

Elmer Edward Castan, 90, of Nebraska City died on Friday, April 25, at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City. He was born on July 27, 1917 on a farm near Falls City, the son of Albert and Jennie (Bryant) Castan.
He attended country school near Falls City.
He married Virginia Lyons in 1939 and Alice M. Kubel in 1949. He worked for and retired from the Tri-Pac Cabinet Factory in Auburn. After retirement, he enjoyed janitorial work at both the Eagles Club and Pamida Store in Nebraska City. He was one who loved to be around people and never met a “stranger.” Many will remember his trademark statement of “Hi ornery.”
He is survived by daughter Marjorie Hagerdon and husband Bill of Mapleton, Iowa; two grandchildren: Darin William Hagerdon and wife Leslie and Dena Jean Heitman and husband Troy; two great-grandchildren: Shelby Lynn Hagerdon and Alexa Brooke Heitman; special friend Bertha Fenske of Nebraska City; sister-in-law Marie Castan of Puyallup, Wash.; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alice on October 7, 1993; sisters Mary Ebel and Gladys Chesnut; and brothers George, Fred, Earl and Carl Castan.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery at Hamburg.
The family will greet friends from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Visitation is open after 2 p.m. Monday at the Gude Mortuary.
