Nebraska’s primary election is Tuesday, May 13, with polls open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Republicans will determine which of five candidates for Otoe County Commissioner District 3 will be on the general election ballot in November. The candidates are: Willie Scheef, Paul Wallman, Arlen Ross, Milton Boldt and Dean Speth.

The Democrats have no candidates seeking the county commissioner seat.

For District 1, House of Representatives, Jeff Fortenberry is the only Republican candidate. Max Yashirin is the only Democrat.

For U.S. Senate, Republicans will determine if Mike Johanns or Pat Flynn advances to the general election. Democrats will choose between Larry Marvin, Scott Kleeb, James Bryan Wilson and Tony Raimondo.

Presidential candidates on the ballot are, John McCain and Ron Paul for the Republicans and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Mike Gravel for the Democrats. However, the Democrats’ caucuses determined the party’s delegate split, with Barack Obama winning about two-thirds of the delegates.

Registered Nebraska Party and Green Party voters will narrow their presidential candidates to one as well.

Non-partisan ballot

For non-partisan seats, a maximum of two candidates for each open seat advance to the general election. Therefore, if only one or two candidates have filed for a seat, it does not appear on the primary ballot.

Nebraska City voters will vote for one of the three candidates for Parks and Recreation commissioner: Julie Naberhaus, Jeffrey Crunk and Jerimy Heft. The top two vote-getters will advance to the general election.

In Syracuse, since two city council seats are up for election, four of the five candidates will advance to the Tuesday, Nov. 4, general election. Voters will cast votes for two of the following: Alan Britton, Raymond Umbarger, Lynn Lyon, Jim Pierce and Kristy Henke.

Only two school board races in the area had more than two candidates per open seat and will therefore be on the primary ballot. In the Palmyra and Freeman districts, one candidate in each will be eliminated among the seven that filed in each race.

For District 1 Legislature, which includes the Syracuse area, State Sen. Lavon Heidemann, Elk Creek, is seeking a second term. Jerry Joy, Stella, has mounted a write-in campaign. Joy needs to have his name written in on 5 percent of the ballots in the primary election in order to appear on the November general election ballot.

Syracuse rural fire district voters will consider a budget levy override. Otoe voters will consider establishment of a keno-style lottery.

A proposed constitutional amendment will also be on the ballot. It would allow cities to invest public endowment funds.

Voter registration for the primary election concluded on May 2.

Otoe County has 10,773 registered voters. There are 5,472 Republicans and 3,408 Democrats.

There are also 1,847 registered non-partisan, 40 registered for the Nebraska Party and six registered for the Green Party.
