The May 13 primary election will unofficially decide the Otoe County board of commissioners’ race and eliminate candidates for some other local seats.

Republicans will nominate a candidate in the primary to run unopposed in the November general election for the county board’s third district seat.

There are five Republicans seeking the nomination: Milton C. Boldt, Dean L. Speth, Paul R. Wallman, Willie Scheef and Arlen Ross.

Syracuse voters will eliminate one of the five candidates for city council. The top four vote getters will advance to the general election. Candidates are Jim Pierce, Lynn Lyon, Raymond Umbarger, Kristy K. Henke and Alan Britton.

Palmyra school board voters will also eliminate one of seven candidates in the primary election. Six candidates will advance to the general election, where three will be elected.

Candidates are Jaimi L. Calfee, Kevin S. Heidtbrink, Kevin L. Schroder, Mark Clem, Craig Bolz, Matthew L. Broening and Douglas G. Church.

Voters for Community Memorial Hospital in Syracuse will elect three in the primary. Filing for election are Dallas C. Haynes, Jan Moore and Carolyn Gigstad.

There are two issues that will be decided on the primary ballot.

Otoe voters will decide if the village can conduct a keno-type lottery.

Voters of the Syracuse Rural Fire District will decide if the district may increase the levy lid on property tax up to .01 cent per $100 of valuation through 2013.
