  • Joy Morton “Mort” Porter, age 87 of Omaha, NE  passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 in Omaha, NE.  He was a loving husband and father and long-time resident of Nebr. City, NE. Mort was born on July 1, 1926 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Grosvenor Murray and Mary (Hughey) Porter.  He grew up and attended school in Nebraska City, graduating from the Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1943.
    Following high school he attended the University of Nebraska before enlisting in the United States Navy.  He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy from August 26, 1944 to February 19, 1946.  After returning from the service, he finished his studies at UNL, graduating in 1948.
    He was united in marriage to Mary Katherine Kangieser in November of 1944 in Nebraska City, NE.  Mort owned and operated Morton Orchard in Nebraska City (currently Arbor Day Farm) for many years.  The couple moved to Omaha from Nebraska City in 2005 to be closer to his children.  He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Omaha and was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City.
    Mort is survived by his wife of 70 years Mary Porter of Omaha, NE; his children Julie Porter Eckholt and companion Dick Drager, Grosvenor M. “Budge”  Porter III and wife Diane;  Jane Porter McLeay and husband Bart and Scott Porter and wife Dana all of Omaha, NE; 10 grandchildren:  Katie Nolan and husband Brendan of Charlotte, NC; Claire, Bret, and Brooke Porter; Bryce, Elle, Scotty, and Jack McLeay; Ben and Cecan Porter all of Omaha; a sister Jane Meier of Santa Ana, CA; other family and many friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son Grosvenor Murray Porter II.
    A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2014 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Omaha with Fr. Walter celebrating the Mass.  The family will greet friends on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church.
    Inurnment will be held at a later date at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City with military honors by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail..
    A Memorial Fund is being established in Mort’s memory. Gude Mortuary, Nebr. City, NE in charge of arrangements.
