  • The Lourdes boys' basketball team fought back after a third quarter run by Overton, but ended up falling short in a 65-58 final in first round action of the Class D1 state tourney at Lincoln East High School on Thursday.
Early action favored the Knights as Lourdes posted three straight buckets and got blocked shots on three straight possessions by post man Noah Vasa.
The Knights led 6-0, 8-2 and 10-4. By the end of the first quarter, the margin was down to one point at 13-12.
Overton had an eight-point lead in the second quarter until back-to-back buckets by Mitch Gude had the score at 23-19.
Overton got the last bucket of the first half, however, a three-point shot, and then reeled off 10 straight points to open the second half.
Down 17 points, the Knights could have folded. Instead, Gude and Marco Fabietti hit three point shots and Fabietti went 2-of-2 at the line to get the Overton lead back into single digits.
A three-point shot by Tom Gress got the Knights to within one point at 52-51 in the fourth quarter, but Overton made plays late to pull away for the victory.
Leading scorers for Lourdes were Mitch Gude, 21; Marco Fabietti, 13; Noah Vasa, 12; Tom Gress, seven; Aaron Miller, three; and Jameson DeFreece, two.
