  • Several residents reported hearing a loud explosion in Syracuse Saturday night around 7 p.m. One reported smoke drifting across a park and another seeing a flash. The explosion was said to be strong enough to rattle windows.
Otoe County Sheriff's deputies searched for about an hour and a half for the source of the explosion, but found nothing. Conflicting reports of the direction of the sound also made narrowing the search difficult.
Deputies received a report of flashlights seen around the pool house and searched that area shortly after 7 p.m., then moved their search to the park area and residences in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of Thorne Street.
By 7:40 p.m., deputies were focusing west of Midland Street. People at the golf course were interviewed but had not noticed anything. Backyards in the 1200 block of Midland were searched.
Around 8:10 p.m. deputies were checking North Park then the football field and high school parking lot. Around 8:26 deputies were reporting too many conflicting accounts of the direction of the sound to indicate any additional areas to search.
