  • A fire set by a Thurman, Iowa, man, alerted passersby to his need for help following a one-vehicle accident at about 7:40 p.m. Jan. 15.
Timothy McCollum, 38, was southbound on 310th Street in Mills County when his 1993 Honda Accord left the roadway, entered the east ditch and a creek bed before coming to rest under a bridge, out of sight of the roadway.
Iowa State Patrol reports that McCollum was able to free himself and crawl onto the embankment. However, due to his injuries, he was not able to get up the embankment, so he started a fire. A passing motorist saw the fire and found the driver on the creek embankment.
McCollum was transported by Lifenet to Creighton Medical Center.
