Marcene Welchans, age 92 of Shenandoah, IA (formerly rural Riverton, IA) passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, IA.
Marcene was born on April 18, 1921 in her grandparents home south of Riverton, IA; the daughter of Wilbur and Gladys (Monroe) King. She attended school in Riverton and graduated from the Riverton High School in 1939, as the Class Valedictorian. She was united in marriage to Earl “Pete” Welchans on May 21, 1950 in Nebraska City, NE.
Marcene was a loving wife and mother. After high school, she worked at Henry Fields Nursery from 1939 until her marriage. She was very active in her community and served on the Fremont County Cancer Board.
She is survived by her children Betty Heatherington and husband LeRoy of Shenandoah, IA and Judy Vogler of Bellevue, NE; four grandchildren: Jeffrey, David and Amy Lynn Heatherington and Karen Taylor; two great-grandchildren: Austin Taylor and Chase Sherwood; brother-in-law Jack Hall of Red Oak, IA; other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Earl “Pete” Welchans on February 2, 2005; her parents and siblings: Dorothy Aspedon, Richard King and Peggy Hall.
Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at the Riverton Cemetery in Riverton, IA with Pastor Jack Langley officiating.
The family will greet friends prior to the services on Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA.
