  • Jean L. Wurtele, age 81 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013 in Lincoln, NE.
    Jean was born on March 14, 1932 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Sterling and Caroline (Heng) Kreifels. She attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1949. She was united in marriage to Donald Wurtele on October 18, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Paul, NE. and the couple had 11 children - one which passed away at birth.
    She was a loving and devoted wife and mom and in addition to raising her family, Jean worked at the former Western Auto Store, Montgomery Wards and Mercer’s True Value Hardware as their bookkeeper for some 22 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. Jean also taught C.C.D. and served on the District 12 School Board for 6 years.
    She is survived by her children: Donna Maybee of Lincoln, NE; Terri Schlichtemeier and husband Tom of Murray, NE; Carrie Lynn Wendt of Lincoln, NE; Curt Wurtele and wife Mary of Nebr. City; Renee Hauder and husband Bill of Omaha, NE; Randy Wurtele and wife Connie of Nebr. City; Michael Wurtele of Nebr. City; Christine Blake and husband Howard of Lincoln, NE; Kay Evans of Lincoln, NE and Elaine Tasler and husband Jerry of Atkinson, NE; 23 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; siblings: Francis “Pat” Kreifels and wife Irma of Dunbar, NE; John Kreifels and wife Janet of Lincoln, NE; Marilyn Neels and husband Orlin of Dunbar, NE; twin sister Joyce Kempkes of Nebr. City and Carolyn Lechner of Nebr. City; brother-in-law Allen Burr of Syracuse, NE; many other family and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald Wurtele on June 9, 2011; an infant son Bradley in 1973; a grandson Noah Wendt and a sister Marcene Burr.
    A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January, 2, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska. City Burial will follow the services at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nebr. City.
    A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (1/1) evening at St. Mary’s Catholic Church followed by the family greeting friends.
    Memorials may be given to Community Hospice Care or the American Diabetes Assn.
