  • Carl Eugene Brown, 89, of Hamburg, died Dec. 6, 2013 at the Ambassador in Sidney. He was born in Riverton on Jan. 24, 1924 to Robert Tracey and Maggie Jane (Smith) Brown.

  • Carl Eugene Brown, 89, of Hamburg, died Dec. 6, 2013 at the Ambassador in Sidney. He was born in Riverton on Jan. 24, 1924 to Robert Tracey and Maggie Jane (Smith) Brown.
    He graduated from Hamburg High School in 1942. He served honorably in the Army from March 11, 1943 to March 10, 1946 at Camp Beale, Calif., during World War II.
    He graduated from Thompson School of Beauty Culture in Des Moines May 6, 1947. He opened Carl’s Beauty Shoppe on West E Street in Hamburg on Aug. 25, 1947. In July of 1964, he moved his business to the new American Legion building on Main Street and later built a new shop at 1208 Main until moving the salon to his home in 1996, where he continued until his retirement in 2005. Over a span of time, Carl was the employer for some 30 hairstylists.
    Carl was baptized May 28, 1961 at the First United Methodist Church by Rev. M.J. Nash.
    He married Jane Louise Brown Merris on Aug. 1, 1961 in Hamburg.
    He was a member of the Hamburg American Legion.
    He was preceded by his wife, Jane Brown ,in 1985; and nine brothers and sisters: Roy, Leland, Vernon, Robert, Francis, Sally, Melvina, Virginia and Betty.
    He is survived by step-son J.D. (David) Merris and wife Maggie of Boise, Idaho; grandsons Benjamin Merris and wife Alhena of New York, N.Y., and Matthew Merris of New Orleans; sister Margaret Goad of Irving, Texas; many nieces, nephews and friends.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg with Pastor James Young of the Hamburg Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at the Hamburg Cemetery. Complete military services will be conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post.
    The family will greet friends 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the services at the funeral home.
    Memorials may be given to Hamburg Rescue in his memory.
