  • A last second shot and a heavy dose of intensity defense pushed the Lourdes girls’ and boys’ basketball teams to season-opening victories over Elmwood-Murdock on Thursday night.
The Lourdes girls trailed 21-13 in the third quarter, but refused to back down and rallied back to earn a chance at a victory.
Freshman Libby Fulton made the most of that chance by driving to the bucket and making a shot that put the Lourdes ahead 28-27. Elmwood-Murdock had a shot to reclaim the lead, but missed a buzzer-beater.
Laura Box was the leading scorer for Lourdes with eight. Leah DeFreece, Sam Heng and Karley Kreifels each had six points.
Turning to the Lourdes boys’ contest, the home team used a combination of relentless intensity and a few three-point makes to lead throughout the contest.
The home team led by 10 points entering the final quarter. Elmwood-Murdock cut that lead to five, but the Knights responded with a double-digit run that put the game out of reach.
Foreign exchange student Marco Fabietti led Lourdes with 17 points. Aaron Miller had 10.
The Lourdes teams will return to action on Saturday for a contest at Johnson-Brock. Tip time for JV action will be 2 p.m.
    Nebraska City Pioneers
The Nebraska City girls’ and boys’ basketball teams dropped both halves of a season-opening home doubleheader against Beatrice with the girls’ falling short 50-19 and the boys’ team losing by a final of 56-43.
Andrea Freiling had five points and Katie Zech had eight defensive rebounds to lead the Pioneer girls’ effort.
Both teams will return to action for Friday night contests at Bennington. Tip time for varsity action is 6 p.m.
    S-D-A Rockets
The Rocket wrestling team cruised past Waverly in season-opening action Thursday night. S-D-A had seven pins on the dual and won by a final score of 58-18.
