  • John Nelson, age 96 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

  • John Nelson, age 96 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.
    John was born on December 6, 1916 in Hamburg, IA; the son of Charles C. and Clara A. (Tarr) Nelson.  He was united in marriage to Margaret Alene Miller on November 10, 1939 in Rock Port, MO.  She preceded him in death on September 11, 2012.
    A few years after their marriage, John entered the United States Navy.   He began his service in August of 1942 and served during WWII in the South Pacific on a supply ship.  He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.
    John was a blacksmith by trade.  He worked together with his brother Pete in the business that they owned and operated for several years.  He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebraska City.
    He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his wife, Alene, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters:  Lucille Kraft, Hazel Johnson and Isabel Talbot and two brothers:  William T. Nelson and Wade “Pete” Nelson.
    Graveside Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA with Susie Barrett offering words of comfort.  Military Honors will be conducted by the Hamburg American Legion.  Interment will follow the services.   Condolences may be left at www.gudefuneralhomes.com. Rash-Gude Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
