  • The Downtown Historic Building survey is looking for records and materials to supplement citizens' recollections of buildings' stories.
Jim Kuhn, project organizer, said old Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph phone books are good resources for establishing the timing of certain businesses and where they were located.
We have one from 1961 and it has been very helpful. If anyone has others please let me know and I will find a way to get it copied. We have 129 or so years to go back and try to figure out who and what was in each of these downtown buildings,” he said.
He said old photographs are the project's most desperate need.
He said anyone with an old photograph of the downtown is invited to contact him to have them scanned and returned.
Several people have said yes I have old pictures and advertisements in my attic but just have not gone through them. Let us know and we get them for you and go through them. People ask us all the time what they can do to help and this is probably the single thing that would be the most help right now,” he said.

Other materials useful are old plat maps of Otoe County, business directories and newspaper clippings of business news.
The project has included two events where modern photographs of the downtown are lined up so people can walk through a virtual downtown and write down their memories of buildings and businesses.
Kuhn said another downtown gathering will be scheduled for people to jot down their memories.
At these Gatherings people tell us hundreds of things very quickly and we can not remember all those things, dates, and names without having them written down. Several of the research team have certain blocks or addresses they research and if things are written down they can get to the right person for entry into what was in that block,” Kuhn said.
