  • Eldon Gene Rhoten, 72, of Peru, Neb., died at his home surrounded by family on Nov. 12, 2013. He was born on Nov. 4, 1941 to Howard and Ellen (Mohlman) Rhoten in Lincoln. He married Paula Wall on July 27, 1962 in Syracuse.
Eldon was an electrician by profession, but his passion was Sprint Car racing. He raced for 50 years and was truly loved by the racing community. Once he retired, he indulged his other passion, nature. He moved to Peru on an acreage and enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors. He shared his home over the years with eight dachshunds and never had a time without one in his life. He was a friend to all and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He loved his family and spending time with them. He also enjoyed having everyone come visit him at the acreage.
Eldon served in the Navy as chief mechanic to the captain’s plane on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard. He was a member of the VFW Post #8334 in Millard, Nebraska Modified Racing Association, American Legion #0374 of Millard, IBEW International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 22, Big Car Racing Association, 50 Years of Sprint Car Racing and recently raced Nebraska 360 Sprint Series.
Eldon is survived by  wife Paula of Peru; son Kevin of Peru; daughter Michelle Rohlfing of Omaha; grandson Zachary Armstrong of Omaha; granddaughter Veronica Rohlfing of Omaha; sister Joan Allen of Douglas; brother Howard and Carolyn Rhoten of Omaha; sister Judi and Marvin Sterns of Lincoln; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents.
