  • Nebraska City Fire and Rescue are accepting donations for a two holiday elf projects.
New toys, gifts and monetary donations are being accepted city hall and the EMS office for delivery to Nebraska City kids on Christmas Eve.
EMS Captain Cathy Blankenship while planning the Christmas Eve elf project, fire and EMS learned that there is an immediate need for socks and winter wear.
A “sock drop and mitten madness” collection is also being held for delivery Nov. 15 to Dec. 6.
New socks, mittens, gloves, hats and scarfs can be donated at the fire station, Nebraska City High School and Tree City Tees at 620 Central Ave.
This is the first year the fire/rescue division has sponsored an elf project.
Blankenship said former paramedic manager Rodney Turpel had described a similar project held in Florida where Santa Claus distributed toys and gifts from a fire engine.
She said winter weather does not make a Florida-style event practical, but she felt it would be meaningful to kids to see Santa and firefighters working together.
“It had to be on Christmas Eve because Santa could not fit it into his schedule on Christmas Day,” she said.
