  • Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce announced today that Nebraska City has been selected as the site for next year's Cornhusking state contest next fall.
NCTC is currently forming a hosting committee for the Oct. 11, 2014, event, which will preceded the national cornhusking championships by one week.
Tim Pendrell of NCTC said Nebraska City is a natural fit for the competition, which was once considered America's fastest growing sport. Cornhusking contests in the 1930 drew up to 100,000 spectators and were carried by National Public Radio.
Pendrell said cornhusking competitors even received proposals for their hand in marriage.
The hosting committee will be asked to help identify a location for the event. A minimum of five acres of standing corn is needed, but the field owner can keep hand-picked harvest.
"It is perfect for Nebraska City, which is already the fall harvest capital of the Midwest," Pendrell said. "For us, it's an opportunity to have another great event during our fall season and to celebrate our long history of agricultural production," he said.
