  • Fremont County sheriff's deputies apprehended three teens Tuesday suspected of stealing a pickup truck after leaving the Quakerdale Youth Center in Manning, Iowa, and leading officers on a pursuit from Nebraska City.
The sheriff's office reports the teens were in a pickup truck reported stolen from Plattsmouth on Monday night and were traveling speeds in excess of 110 mph near the intersection of Highway 2 and Interstate 29.
The suspected driver is a 16-year-old boy and the passengers are a 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy.
Otoe County sheriff's deputies received a report of a gas drive-off in Peru involving the stolen 2012 Dodge Ram pickup and learned the teens had asked for directions to Omaha.
A deputy crossed the south intersection at Nebraska City to check traffic on Highway 75, when he saw a pickup without license plates.
The deputy turned to attempted a traffic stop. There were cars backed up at the Highway 2 stoplight, but the pickup went into the roadside ditch and raced east on Highway 2.
The deputy followed through the ditch and police and other deputies joined the pursuit.
Chief Deputy Mike Holland said the high speeds raised safety concerns because there was construction leading up to the Missouri River bridge and traffic was reduced to one-lane.
He said since authorities were informed that juveniles were in the truck and speeds were approaching 100 mph, he decided it was best to try and de-escalate the chase.
"In my mind, I feel juveniles under huge stress like that don't always think rationally. They might take risks that an adult would not normally take, so for their safety and the safety of the public, our stance became more focused on surveillance," he said.
Deputies alerted Iowa officials and followed the truck as far as Riverton, Iowa, to provide backup to Fremont County authorities.
Fremont County deputies received a report from Sidney describing the pickup and found the vehicle parked in the parking lot near the Sidney Elementary School.
They learned the teens had entered the Sidney Public Library to access the Internet.
They were apprehended after a brief foot chase and are being held on charges of theft, eluding police, reckless driving and other offenses.
The sheriff's office says they are also suspected a stealing a vehicle in Manning and for involvement in police chases in Atchison, Mo., theft in Nemaha County and a vehicle arson in Nemaha County.
