Berniece E. Shuey , 101, died Sept 4, 2013 at Welcov Assisted Living in Kearney. She was formerly from Nebraska City and Omaha, where she lived with her husband, Dean, who preceded her in death in 1992, and also four brothers and one sister.
Berniece was born Aug. 28, 1912 in Brock to Charles and Sadie (Scribner) Lare.
She graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1931, received her teaching certificate from Peru State Teachers College, and taught country school until her marriage to Dean in 1937.
She worked at Singer Sewing Company and Jessup Drug Store in Nebraska City before she and Dean moved to Omaha where they lived for 30 years.
Berniece was a past madam president and a member of the Grand Auxiliary for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She was a Golden Eagle member (50 years or more) at Nebraska City FOE 968.
Bea, as everyone knew her, worked for a Tupperware Distributor in Ralston before retiring. She was a loyal "Go Big Red" football fan and followed them on television when she could no longer attend the games. She thoroughly enjoyed the football season, fishing in Minnesota and playing cards.
Upon Dean's death, she moved back to Nebraska City. She was there until 2005 when she moved to Welcov Assisted Living in Kearney.
She is survived by daughters Judy Arnold and husband Terry of Omaha and Jane Arthur and husband Mark of Kearney; son Jim Shuey and wife Sandy of Kearney; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12. There will be no visitation prior to the service.
Honorary pallbearers are Bea's grandchildren Monte Arnold, Wendy Saathoff, Scott Young, Steve Arnold, Lori Garcia and Jeff Shuey.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
