At approximately 4:00 AM today inmate Robert Carter #67204, while temporarily assigned to Bryan West Campus, assaulted a correctional officer. The NDCS officer had escorted Carter to the restroom and was just outside the restroom door, maintaining visual supervision. Carter yelled at the officer, turned toward him and hit him in the head. Carter then headed toward the hospital room door. The officer gave Carter verbal commands to stop when Carter turned back and stabbed the officer with a metal butter knife. The officer received cuts to his head, neck, and ear which required medical treatment. The officer was released following treatment.
NDCS investigators are investigating the incident in cooperation with Lincoln Police Department.
The Department of Correctional Services has contractual arrangements with area medical facilities to provide health care for inmates confined in our correctional facilities that require acute care that is beyond the scope of skilled correctional health care facilities. Inmates temporarily transferred to such community medical facilities are directly supervised by NDCS security staff at all times. Inmates are returned to the correctional institution as soon as their condition no longer requires hospital treatment.
Carter is assigned to the Nebraska State Penitentiary and was admitted to Bryan West Campus on Sunday due to immediate medical issues that could not be addressed by correctional healthcare professionals. Carter was in leg restraints at all times during the incident in accordance with NDCS procedure. He was subdued outside his hospital room with assistance from law enforcement officers who were present in the hospital.
Carter is serving a 30 year sentence from Douglas and Sarpy Counties for the offenses of Attempted Assault on an Officer/ Two Counts of Use of Weapon/Firearm and Six Counts of Robbery. Carter began serving his sentence in January 2008 and has a tentative release date of November 22, 2036.
