Hereld Bruce Nelson, 90, of Brock, died Aug. 29, 2013 at his home. Bruce was born on Aug. 9, 1923 in Coffeeville, Miss., to James Henry and Virginia (O'Bryant) Nelson.
After his schooling, he entered the United States Navy Dec. 1, 1942. He served on various vessels and at numerous stations during his time of service. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 22, 1946 as a Gunner's Mate Third Class.
He married Yvonne M. "Bonnie" Waller on May 6, 1948 in Kansas City, Mo.
Over the years, Bruce was involved in many construction projects primarily as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Nebraska City, the American Legion and the Eagles.
He is survived by son William D. Nelson of Lincoln; daughter Nancy Thorne of Nebraska City; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister Louise Roark of Grenada, Miss.; brother Elton Nelson of South Haven, Miss.; other family and friends.
He was preceded by by wife Yvonne "Bonnie" Nelson on March 14, 2004; son David A. Nelson in 1974; son-in-law Ron Thorne; brothers Robert, James and William; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Jerry Albright of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Military services will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail.
The family will greet friends on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City from 5-7 p.m.
