Elvin Fred John Emshoff, 87, died Aug. 17, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center, Syracuse. He was born Aug. 30, 1925, in Avoca to John and Matilde (Koester) Emshoff.
Elvin graduated in 1943 from Avoca School and in September of 1944 entered the United States Army. He married Anna Maxine Seegel on Aug. 8, 1947, at First Lutheran Church, (North Branch).
He worked as a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier for many years. He was a member of Avoca Lions Club, a member of Avoca Fire Department, Mayor of Avoca, Avoca City Council member, Avoca School Board member, a coin collector, and an avid fisherman. He built the Avoca Sportsman’s Club and started the Cass County Baseball Association. He was a member of Massie-Richards American Legion Post in Syracuse along with the Mid-Otoe County Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a caretaker for Anna.
Elvin married LaVerta Hillman on Feb. 17, 1990, at First Lutheran Church (North Branch).
Elvin is survived by daughters Sue (Philip) Crafton of Omaha, Jonna (Ronald) Hubbard of Marysville, Kan., and Polly (Greg) Frye of Eagle; grandchildren Casey (Stephanie) Frye, Andrew (Trisha) Crafton, Sarah Crafton, Mitchell (Megan) Frye and Wesley (Ashley) Frye; four great grandchildren, Easton Frye, Gage Frye, Creighton Frye and Vincent Crafton; step daughter Jill McAuliffe; step daughter-in-law Barb Heusman; brother Wilbert (Leora) Emshoff; brothers-in-law Wayne Wessel and Dean Seegel; sister-in-law Crystal Potts; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by wives Anna Maxine and LaVerta, brother Ralph Emshoff, and sisters Darlene Emshoff and Anna Mae Wessel.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 21, at First Lutheran Church (North Branch) in rural Avoca with burial at Avoca Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the First Lutheran Church (North Branch).
