Nebraska City High School hosted a community pep rally at Pioneer Field Friday night to help kick off the seasons for school's the fall sports teams.
Five coaches and one student representative on hand to talk to the crowd. Coaches included Mark Ritchie, girls' golf; Dan Holmberg, boys' tennis; Ron Schaulis, girls' and boys' cross country; Jenny Gawart, softball; and B.T. Kracl, football.
Katie Zech, a senior on this year's Nebraska City volleyball team, spoke on behalf of her coach, Jennifer Koehler, as well as her teammates.
In addition to visits from the coaches, fans were treated to games, concessions, cheers, band performances, and a special tribute to NCHS graduate and Olympic champion wheelchair racer Cheri Becerra-Madsen, who recently brought home a pair of bronze medals from the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France. Madsen announced that she is currently in training to compete in her first marathon, the Boston Marathon. Her long term goal is to represent the United States in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Looking at the schedule for the Nebraska City athletic teams, the Pioneer softball team will kick off the fall sports by hosting Falls City at the Nebraska City Softball Complex on Thursday, Aug. 22. First pitch of the JV game is 4:30 p.m. with varsity action to follow.
The first football game is Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at home against Auburn.
