Peru State athletic director Steve Schneider recently announced the hiring of Andy Kohls and Derek Derr as new assistant football coaches for the Bobcat football program.
Kohls and Derr both have been on staff as part-time coaches for the past two seasons, with Kohls serving as a graduate assistant for the past two years and Derr doing the same this past season. In addition, Kohls served as the Delzell Hall Director during those two years and Derr has served as the intramural coordinator.
A 2010 graduate of Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio, Kohls was a four-year letter winner and three- year starter on the offensive line. Kohls served as a captain his senior year and was a two-time Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Scholar-Athlete. In addition, his senior year Kohls was named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.
Kohls graduated with a bachelor of science in biology from Defiance. He will complete his master's of science in organizational management with a focus on entrepreneurship from Peru State in August of 2013. Regarding his hiring, Kohls said,"First I would like to thank Coach Schneider and the administration for giving me this opportunity. I am very excited to be able to continue to be a part of Bobcat football. I look forward to working with Coach Schneider and the rest of the coaching staff to continue on our path to take Peru State Football to the next level!"
Derr, originally from Maitland, Mo., was a member of the Bobcat football team for four years, earning letters each year. Following graduation from Peru State, Derr played on the Iowa Blackhawks arena team for two years. During his first year, the Blackhawks won their league championship and finished as runner-ups the second year. In addition, Derr was a two-time Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
In 2010, Derr graduated with his bachelor of science in sport management from Peru State with honors. Presently, he is working on his master's of science in organizational management with an emphasis on sport and recreation management through Wayne State College. Derr was appreciative of being hired and stated, "I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue my coaching career in a fulltime capacity. Peru State is a special place since I graduated and played here. I am excited for the direction of the program and look forward to the upcoming season."
As part of their position, Kohls will serve as the recruiting coordinator and Derr will be the strength and conditioning coordinator for the football team while retaining his intramural responsibilities.
Schneider, who also serves as the head football coach in addition to his athletic director duties, was pleased with the recent hires in the fulltime positions. He said, "Having worked with these two the past two years, I am pleased to have them on board in their new roles. Both bring a good deal of knowledge to the program and will help the entire program continue to move in the right direction."
