Alex Shada of the Food Bank of Lincoln told Otoe County commissioners Tuesday that distributions near Syracuse and Nebraska City are part of the organization's 16-county service commitment.
The first Friday of each month, the Food Bank of Lincoln delivers food to Osage St. Paul pantry south of Syracuse and oversees distribution of food-filled backpacks for Syracuse elementary students.
Southeast Nebraska Community Action is a member agency of the Food Bank, which also picks up and distributes donated food from Walmart in Nebraska City.
"Over 11 percent of people in Otoe County are food-insecure. At least 750 children are not sure how or when they get their next meal," Shada said. "The current need is great and we rely heavily on local support to help those who are struggling to put food on the table during the holidays," he said.
Shada, public relations director, urged people in need of food stamp assistance to call the Food Bank at 402-466-8170 to begin applications.
