Although it may have been stormy in the area when a power black out caused Nebraska City Utilities customers to lose power, it was not the weather to blame.
It was a black snake.
The snake crawled into a substation and knocked out a transmission line at about 4:35 a.m. said LeRoy Frana, general manager of Nebraska City Utilities.
The outage impacted all NC Utilities customers in Nebraska City, south to Brock, north to Wyoming Precinct and west to the communities of Otoe, Lorton and Dunbar.
Customers were without power for 20 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes, depending on location.
Besides a burned out switch "there was very little damage," said Frana. "The protective equipment did what it was supposed to do," he said.
The outdoor warning siren at the Otoe County Courthouse also sounded.
Gregg Goebel, emergency management director, said the siren automatically sounded when electricity was restored to the courthouse and the warning system computers rebooted.
