  • Obituary: Erma Catherine “Katie” (Barrett) Olney, 83

  • Erma Catherine “Katie” (Barrett) Olney, 83, of Nebraska City, died July 3 2013, at her home. She was born on Oct. 13, 1929 in Dresden, Mo., to Hiley James Barrett Sr. and Ethel Marie (Earith) Barrett.
    After graduating from high school, Katie and Leslie Claire Olney were married Aug. 27, 1950, in Mount Ayr, Iowa. They lived in Des Monies for about six months before moving to Nebraska City.

  • Erma Catherine “Katie” (Barrett) Olney, 83, of Nebraska City, died July 3 2013, at her home. She was born on Oct. 13, 1929 in Dresden, Mo., to Hiley James Barrett Sr.  and   Ethel Marie (Earith) Barrett.
    After graduating from high school, Katie and Leslie Claire Olney were married Aug. 27, 1950, in Mount Ayr, Iowa. They lived in Des Monies for about six months before moving to Nebraska City.     
    Katie had worked at American Meter Company for a few years before she decided to open a day care out of her home. Besides raising her own children, Katie helped raise several of her grand and great-grandchildren and numerous other local children.
    Katie never really retired from watching children, because she loved each and every one of them as her own.
    She was a member of the First Christian Church in Nebraska City.
    She was preceded by grandson Chris Meyer on July 4, 1990; great granddaughter Destiny Padilla in 1999; husband on July 26, 2004; son James on Aug. 2, 2011; seven brothers; and three sisters.
    Survivors of Katie include her children: daughter Linda Kay Meyer of Sidney, Iowa; son Terry Olney of Nebraska City; 11 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; bothers Don and Penny Barrett of California, and Ron and Regina Barrett of Nebraska City; sister-in-law Wanda Barrett of Nebraska City; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.
    Visitation and family greeting of friends will be Saturday, July 6, from 10-11 a.m. at Peterson Mortuary.
    A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at the Peterson Mortuary Chapel in Nebraska City. Rev. Jerry Albright of the First Christian Church will officiate the service. Katie will be cremated following the funeral service. At a later date, Katie’s and Leslie’s ashes will be buried in Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City.
    Memorials are suggested to the choice of the family.
