With additional fresh produce in bloom, be sure to avoid foodborne illness by following some simple steps in the kitchen. First, always use clean scissors to open bags of produce. Always wash fruit before peeling it. The peel can carry bacteria that can spread during the cutting, peeling or eating time frame. Always wash fresh fruits and vegetables with cool tap water right before eating. No soap scrubs are necessary. For fresh melons and cucumbers, scrub the produce firmly with a clean produce brush. With lettuce, remove and discard the outer leaves. After cleaning, place washed produce into clean storage containers, not the original purchase containers.
