Jerry Gude was born July 3, 1925 and was raised on the home place south of Hamburg, IA. He attended elementary and high school in Hamburg graduating from Hamburg High School with the class of 1942.
Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 15, 1942 and after boot camp at Great Lakes, IL he was assigned to communication school at the University of Illinois. From there he was assigned to the U.S.S. Merrimac and later the U.S.S. Ancon. Jerry was sent back to the United States in September of 1943 for officers training and attended Northwestern University, College of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota. He was discharged from the Navy on July 4, 1946 and enrolled in the University of Missouri graduating in June of 1948.
He began his career with Wickstrom Beauty Supply Company June of 1949 and continued there until his retirement in 1992 after 43 years of service.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Grayson on October 23, 1954 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg and to this union four sons were born: Mike, Pat, Mark and Bob.
Jerry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hamburg American Legion and the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders Assn. He enjoyed gardening and sporting events - especially football and horseracing but his family was his deepest love.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Hamburg, IA; four sons: Mike Gude and wife Becky, Pat Gude and wife Martha and Bob Gude and wife Thea all of Kansas City, MO and Mark Gude and wife Katrina of Hamburg, IA; 13 grandchildren: Claire, Robert, Ellen, Marian, Kelly, Augie, Andrew, Joseph, Thomas, Elizabeth, Michael, Margaret and Matthew; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by 11 siblings: Leo, Maude, Joseph, Lorena, John, Jim, Marie, Pearl, Marguerite, Larry and Carl "Honk".
Jerry passed away on Friday; June 21, 2013 at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 18 days.
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, June 24, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg, IA with Fr. Vernon Smith officiating. Burial followed the service at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Hamburg, IA with military honors conducted by the Hamburg American Legion.
A Prayer Svc. was held at 5:00 p.m on Sunday (6/23) followed by visitation with family until 7:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home, Hamburg, IA.
