Sr. Teresa Marie Schmitz, 92, formerly of Paul and Nebraska City, died May 13, 2013, at her home at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Mo, north of St. Louis. She was a Franciscan Sister of Mary for more than 76 years.
She was born Anne Dolores Schmitz on Dec. 31, 1920, in Paul to Aloysius Raymond and Clara Anne (Kreifels) Schmitz. After her father’s death in 1922, her mother married William Meredith.
Anne Dolores entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville, Mo., on Sept. 3, 1936; she received the name Sr. Teresa Marie, and she professed final vows May 6, 1942. (In 1987 the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville and the Sisters of St. Mary of St. Louis reunited as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary.)
She became a registered nurse in 1943 and a certified x-ray technician in 1949 (St. Anthony’s Hospital School of Nursing, Oklahoma City, Okla.). She served at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Mo.; St. Joseph of the Pines, Southern Pines, N.C.; St. Mary’s Community Hospital, Nebraska City; Mount Alverno Convent, Maryville, Mo.; and St. Anthony’s Hospital, Oklahoma City. She also served in pastoral care at St. Anthony’s.
She retired in May 1997, moving to St. Louis.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, stepfather, four sisters, a brother, a stepbrother, a stepsister, and a half-brother.
She is survived by four half-brothers—William Meredith of Yankton, S.D., Harvey Leo Meredith of Waco, Texas, and James and Roger Meredith, both of Vista, Calif.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
