Richard D. “Pooder” Bennett, 64 of Lincoln, formerly of Riverton, Iowa, died May 2, 2013 at The Monarch in Lincoln, surrounded by his loving children. He was born on Nov. 7, 1948 in Nebraska City to Jasper and Wilma Louise (Gladwin) Bennett.
He was a heavy equipment operator during his working years and also drove truck — a job that he started at a very young age. He had worked for Whitehead Construction for many years. After his health began to decline, Dick enjoyed making potholders and giving them to his family and friends. He was a very generous individual contributing to various nonprofit organizations. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor, kind heart, and willingness to help anyone who needed it.
He is survived by his two children: Candi Wilmot and husband Lance of Lincoln and Kirk Bennett of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandson Michael DeAnda of Lincoln; siblings Maxine Beers and husband Tom of Branson, Mo., Sandy Sterling of Nebraska City, Beverly Packwood and husband Rex of Tecumseh, Doug Bennett of Riverton, Deb Stukenholtz and husband Ron of Bellevue and Sharon Schweitzer and husband George of Lincoln; other family and many friends.
He was preceded by sister Rozella Murphy, nephew Chris Stukenholtz and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City. Adam Pierce will conduct the services and burial will follow in the Camp Creek Cemetery southeast of Nebraska City.
The family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, May 6, at Gude Mortuary.
