  • The Nebraska City Board of Appeals granted Albert and Linda Zook an additional 60 days to finish work on their house at 420 First Corso.
City commissioners declared the house a life safety issue in October of 2012 and gave the Zooks 30 days to repair or demolish the house.
Linda Zook said she was disappointed with the new timeline.
The Zooks have removed the roof on a wrap-around porch, made interior repairs and removed clutter.
She said the new 60-day deadline is difficult for them to accomplish.
Building Inspector Alan Viox said the Zooks informed the board  that they intend to build an addition on the house.
The board asked them to provide contractor blue prints before Viox would issue a building permit.
Viox said the exposed wood from removal of the porch roof should be waterproofed.
He said the Zooks also need to remove the porch decking and supports.
He said there has been some clean-up of the property, but should be finished as the decking is removed.
He said the Zooks have seven days to waterproof the siding and an additional seven days to clean up the property.
“If they fail to do any of this in the 60 days, they board of appeals will uphold the city council’s earlier declaration to condemn,” Viox said.
Albert Zook bought the property in 2008 and the city moved to condemn a garage north of the house in 2009.
Zook preserved the brick garage by bracing up the north wall.
