William “Bill” Petersen was born on January 8, 1921 to Herman & Anna (Grundman) Petersen in rural Johnson County. He passed away on Wednesday April 24, 2013 at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center at the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 16 days.
Bill joined the Army on August 15, 1942 and was sent to Washington D.C. where he was part of the contingent protecting the capital. He was later sent to Europe and landed on Omaha beach and participated in the push across France and the Battle of the Bulge.
When Bill returned home he married Agnes Halvorsen on March 17, 1946 at the United Methodist Church. Bill worked as a farmhand for many years; he also worked at Truscott Implement and the Syracuse Elevator until retiring. Bill and Agnes had three children Terry, Darrel, and Karen. Bill was active as a 4-H leader, Fair Board Member and Rescue Squad member as well as a charter member of the Apple Corps barbershop chorus. He also belonged to American Legion Massie-Richards Post 100, Mid Otoe County Veterans of Foreign Wars #5547 both of Syracuse, NE.
Bill is survived by his wife Agnes, of Syracuse, NE, sons Terry and wife Janet, of Fort Madison, IA, Darrel and wife Debbie, of Sioux Falls, SD, and daughter Karen and husband Harry Heafer, of Lincoln, NE 5 grandchildren Ashley and husband Shane Jacobs, Erin and husband Ryan Reitsma, Eric Petersen, William Haefer, Bailey Haefer. 5 great grandchildren, sisters Hilda Wellensick, of Syracuse, NE, Elenora Walters, of Nebraska City, NE, brother Delmar Petersen, of Hastings, NE.
He is preceded in death by his parents Herman and Anna Petersen, brothers Elding and Alvin Petersen, and sister Ruby Hayes.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday April 27, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Syracuse at 11:00 A.M.

Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Friday April 26, from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. with family greeting friends from 6 until 8 P.M. all at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Nebraska City Apple Corps or the United Methodist Church.
