  • The first bike rack and bicycles for Nebraska City’s “city bike” program were placed on Central Avenue for the Easter weekend.
A bike rack was placed near the northeast bumpout at Central Avenue and 11th Street Thursday night.
Alma Breckenridge put out two used bicycles for free use.
She said riders are expected to have their own helmets, but the city bike program expects to have some helmets available at city hall.
The bikes placed include a Schwinn classic with front basket and a Schwinn 10-speed with a rear rack.
There was at least one rider on Friday morning. A cyclist took the 10-speed from 11th Street to the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting and then returned the bicycle.
The city bike program is intended to provide unlocked, free bicycles for people to ride and return.
Multiple sites for bike racks are planned, but the first three sites will be at city hall, the Sixth Street parking lot and the 11th and Central location.
