A van driven by Lee St. Clair, 24, of Nebraska City careened off of Highway 75 Tuesday, jumping a tributary of the Weeping Water Creek and wedging into a marsh. St. Clair and a passenger, 20-year-old Devon Cropp, were asleep when the van left the roadway.
Cropp said he woke up as soon as the car hit the ditch. It missed the concrete abutment of a highway bridge and Cropp could see the creek bed ahead. St. Clair said he had the cruise control set at 60 mph.
“I think we set a new record for jumping a van over a creek,” Cropp said.
Both men were wearing seatbelts and front airbags deployed when the van slid to a stop in a grassy marsh just ahead of clump of trees.
