  • LaVerta Marie Meta Hillman Heusman Van Winkle Emshoff, 84, of Syracuse, died March 9, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse. She was born Aug. 10, 1928 on the family farm near Otoe, the 11th child of Anna (Ottens) and Fritz Hillman.

  • LaVerta Marie Meta Hillman Heusman Van Winkle Emshoff,  84, of Syracuse, died March 9, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse.  She was born Aug. 10, 1928 on the family farm near Otoe, the 11th child of Anna (Ottens) and Fritz Hillman.
        She was baptized Sept. 11, 1928 and confirmed on May 10, 1942 at North Branch Lutheran Church. She graduated from Otoe High in 1945, attended Peru Sate College and taught District 10 near Syracuse.
        On May 27, 1947 she married Marvin Heusman. They made their home northwest of Sterling and had a Grade A Dairy for many years. They had two children, Bob and Jill, and also opened their home to a number of foster children. LaVerta began work Jan 10, 1972 at the Department of Roads. She was employed there for 18 ½ years.
        June 16, 1973 she married Donald J. Van Winkle at Sterling. On Feb. 17, 1990 she married Elvin F. Emshoff at First Lutheran Church of Avoca.
        She was a member of the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school for many years.
        LaVerta is survived by husband Elvin Emshoff of Syracuse; daughter Jill McAuliffe of Sterling; daughter-in-law Barb Heusman; sisters Bernice Lenker of Syracuse and Marian Curtis of California; grandchildren Trish Bessey (Jeff), Bob Heusman Jr. (Wendy), Kevin Heusman (Marissa), Ryan McAuliffe (Becky) and Kristi Furtado; nine great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and step daughters Sue Crafton, Polly Frye, Jonna Hubbard and their families.
        She was preceded in death by husbands Marvin Heusman and Donald Van Winkle; son Robert Heusman Sr.; son-in-law Mike McAuliffe; grandson  Darrin (Heusman) Bouc; sisters Alma Hillman, Lena Knickman (William), Sophie Jacobson (Alvin), Dorothy Buchholz (John), Verena Paap (Lawrence) and Helen Kepler (John); brothers Alvin Hillman (Viola) and Paul Hillman (Wanda); and brother-in-law Harold Heusman (Doris).
        Funeral Services are Tuesday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church (North Branch) in rural Avoca. Burial is at the Sterling Cemetery in Rural Sterling t 2:30 p.m.
        Visitation is Monday, March 11, until 9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m., all at the funeral home.
        Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
