The Nebraska City speech team held a new event, the speech peformance night, at the high school on Thursday.
Students performed oral interpretation of drama skits, which require players to deliver lines without looking at or touching other players, in the auditorium.
They then broke up for individual speeches in classrooms.
Speech teacher Jenna Bowman said the 20 students out this year makes the largest speech team she has worked with.
She recognized seniors Claudia Flores, Michael Collman, Amanda Dia, MacKenzie Larson and Jake Tierra.
Students will compete at districts March 9, with the top three finishers qualifying for state competition.
