  • An early offensive and some late free throws helped the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca boys’ basketball team to top Louisville 68-54 in a sub-district rematch between the two teams on Tuesday at Johnson-Brock.
It was Louisville that enjoyed the lead at half and entering the fourth quarter of the first meeting. S-D-A used a fourth quarter scoring explosion to overcome the deficit and score a win.
On Tuesday, the Rockets got out of the gate quickly in scoring a 17-8 lead before going to half up 35-21.
The lead grew to 40-21 in the second half before the Rockets grew a bit complacent offensively. And the Lions made their push.
Louisville got the Rocket lead reduced all the way to three at 51-48.
To its credit, the S-D-A team got back on the attack, scored a couple of buckets on dribble penetration, then found their way to the free throw line to seal the win.
“I put it in the starter’s hands. It was their game to win or lose,” said Coach Mark Hrabik. “We stepped up to the line and knocked down our free throws.”
S-D-A, which has been hurt by free throw difficulties this year, finished 25-of-31 on Tuesday. Tim Parde was a perfect 10-of-10 on the game, while David Moss was 8-of-9.
Scoring leaders for S-D-A were Moss, 19; Turner Moore, 15; Parde, 14; Nick Herman, nine; Riley Stubbendeck, six; Tyler Farley, three; and Jayce Cameron, two. The leading scorer for Louisville had 22 points.
With the win, the Rockets advance to play in the sub-district final against Falls City at 7 p.m Thursday at Johnson-Brock. The certainty of the schedule is a bit up in the air due to the impending snow storm, which is expected to begin sometime Thursday according to the latest models.
If snow forces the game off the Thursday schedule, look for a 7 p.m. Friday tip, or, if necessary, a Saturday afternoon start.
