Henry Joseph Gress, 95, of Nebraska City, died Feb. 16, 2013 at Duff’s Friendship Villa in Nebraska City. He was born July 5, 1917 northwest of Paul in Otoe County to Andrew F. and Mary Anna Frances (Zeiner) Gress. He graduated from St. Bernard’s Academy (Lourdes Central High School) in 1936.
Henry entered the Army shortly after the beginning of World War II. He served honorably from Jan. 26, 1942 to Nov. 26, 1945 as a staff sergeant. He was a mechanic.
He married Verna L. Damme on June 4, 1946 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City.
Henry worked at the former Vigen Chevrolet in Nebraska City, Novak’s Auto in Nebraska City for over 25 years as an auto mechanic, in the body shop at Novak’s, at Weineman Auto and for Jerry Gilliland. He was a talented mechanic and was one who could fix anything.
He was the oldest lifetime member of St. Benedict’s Church in Nebraska City.
He is survived by wife Verna Gress of Nebraska City; children Kathleen Martin of Lincoln, Karen Madison and husband Duane of Sidney, Iowa, Donna Gress of Chicago, Ill., and Dean Gress and wife Susan of Lincoln; four grandchildren: Jennifer Garcia, Kyle Madison, Ashley Gress and Tiffany Gress; great-granddaughter Alexa Cronin; sisters Sr. Celine Gress of St. Louis, Mo., and Louise Reed of Nebraska City; brother-in-law Raymond Damme of Talmage; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded by grandson Brian Madison, son-in-law Ron Martin, brother Edward Gress and sisters Martha Davenport, Dorothy Wriston and Rita Kopf.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City. Fr. Mark Cyza will celebrate the Mass and burial will follow in St. Benedict’s Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.
A rosary will be recited Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City. The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. until the rosary service at the church.
