  • After celebrating a district championship last week, the Nebraska City wrestling team got back to work on Monday.
The team’s practices are now aimed at getting ready for two state wrestling tourneys, the individual championships which begin on Thursday at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, and the dual championships, which will be contested on Feb. 23 at Kearney.
“We always talk about stepping stones,” said Pioneer Coach Tyler Hodges. “We’ve got two more to go. These kids have been focusing in on state and state duals. So even the kids that got a little heartbreak, they’ve got more to focus on in two weeks. Ultimately, I think these kids love winning as a team. They function as a team really well.
Nebraska City wrestling supporters should take note. The team will  have a pep rally at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in the old gym at the high school. Also of note, the wrestling team plans to leave for state wrestling at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday and will travel down Central Avenue. Fans are invited to line the streets between 11th Street and Sixth Street on Central Avenue to show support for the wrestlers and bid them good travels as they head for Omaha.
*** See the Tuesday print edition for coverage of the Class B-1 District wrestling tourney.
