  • Otoe County Assessor Therese Gruber told county commissioners Tuesday that portions of the Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard Educational Foundation's property near 5995 G Road will not be exempt from property taxes.
Gruber outlined tax list corrections and tax exemption updates during a board of equalization meeting on Feb. 12.
She said the Kimmel Education and Research Center and the personal property in the building qualify for tax exemption, but not the entire orchard property.
"It doesn't matter if it's not for financial gain or it's put into a private charity, it is not exempt," she said.
The Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard Educational Foundation is owner of the 1,400 acre orchard, picnic shelter, machine shop, restaurant, retail store and apple barn, as well as a house on the grounds.
The orchard paid over $18,000 in property taxes prior to the creation of the educational foundation.
