  • Nebraska City won the Eastern Midlands Conference wrestling tournament and cemented itself as the front runner to take first at the Class B-1 District tourney next weekend during action at Gretna on Saturday.
    The Pioneers' EMC win was its first since the 1995-96 season, a span of 17 years.
    Looking at the team scores, Nebraska City racked up 174 points, while Gretna was second at 157. Both Plattsmouth and Blair had 133 points.
    Other scores were Bennington, 123; Elkhorn South, 119.5; Norris, 81; Elkhorn, 75; and Waverly, 37.
    Gretna and Plattsmouth, both rated teams, will be in attendance for the Class B-1 wrestling tournament, which will be contested Friday and Saturday at Nebraska City.
    Individual Pioneers excelled at the EMC event, with five making the final round and three claiming individual gold medals.
    Jay Sornson, 145, picked up three wins, including a finals win over Lucas Lias of Plattsmouth by a 5-4 decision.
    Keyes Nelson, 195, claimed first place with an overtime win over Gregory Gano of Elkhorn. Nelson's semifinal win over Logan Radik of Gretna also came in extra time.
    At 285 pounds, Trent Kasbohm made the finals and beat Blake Chick of Gretna by a 9-1 major decision.
    Tommie Knapp, 138, and Jake Touchstone, 170, both made it to the finals on Saturday before claiming second place awards.
    Other Pioneers claiming medals were, in order by weight class, Kyle Francois, 120, third; Andrew Christiansen, 126, fourth; Jesse Barton, 132, third; D.J. Marco, 160, third; and Jake Pierce, 220, fourth.
