DID YOU KNOW..Steinhart Park at one time was a horse race track..ALSO racing for motorcycles and cars..the famed Eddie Rickenbacker dumped his race car in the lake..it didnt last long and the race association sold it to the city...NOW It IS RENOWN AS A BASEBALL, PICNIC, SWIMMING, fishing, and horse shoe pits, roller blade spot, and at one time a jump off spot for sledders and also part of the old golf course..famous for it fourth of July celebrations and band concerts and at one time all day baseball tournaments on the Clemmy Holmes field, and band concerts above the pool on the veranda of the  Steinhart Park Lodge, drawing large crowds as well as those in the pool..At one time the concerts were inside the pool area..The lodge at one time was a great meeting place for events, dinners, wedding dances...many a golf ball ended up in the lake, trying to cross over to the hole southwest of the lake..some nasty words were spoke here....The course was also on the south side of Central Ave

A number of guys hit the long ball baseball pitch into the lake..At one time Jim Herman for the Holmes American Legion team hit a home run down left field line that crossed over the road and hit near the creek..Jack Brawner, a lefty, hit one into the lake

There were a lot of great baseball games played on Holmes field and several of the teams made it to state tournaments.

I  also won a lot of baseball games coaching in the Jaycee baseball leagues for many years, along with some great coaches and players on other teams.

I was also fortunate to coach a Nebraska City all-star team that defeated an all-star team from Offutt Field that had not lost in 35 consecutive games but again thats another story for another day of the jaycees and what they did for the city along with its baseball and wrestling teams
