Arlene M. Gress, 88, died Jan. 21, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Nebraska City surrounded by family. Arlene Marie Gress was born on March 4, 1924 at rural Paul to Edward and Marie (Rambat) Bremer. She graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1941. She married Emil Gress on Oct. 10, 1945 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City.
They lived and farmed in the Paul community all their lives. Arlene was a lifelong member of the Paul Extension Club in addition to being a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. For many years, she was a strong advocate for the local 4H Clubs in the Paul area. She was a faithful farm wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Arlene loved arts, crafts, painting, history and traveling.
Survivors include son Alan Gress of Nebraska City; daughters Cheryl Holscher and husband Butch of rural Nebraska City and Vicki Volkmer and husband Steve of Syracuse; grandchildren Jeffrey (Darcy) Gress, Kevin (Brinda) Gress, Clinton (Sara) Gress, Kimberly Gress, Jodi (Garry, Jr.) Gillespie, Aaron (Abbie) Holscher, Ian (Nichole) Ebeler and Dylon Volkmer; great-grandchildren Connor, Duncan and Kelsey Gress, Alexa and Ashley Gress, Kinnison and Harrison Gress, Cassandra Gress, Shaley Stephenson, Ashlyn Miller, Colton Gillespie, and Corbyn Holscher, and Silas, Quentin and London Ebeler; sisters Maxine Burger and Ardell Garlipp and husband Wes, all of Nebraska City; sisters and brothers-in-law Phyllis Paap and husband Allan and Lois Gress, all of Nebraska City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded by husband Emil Gress; infant son Robert and grandson Timothy Ebeler.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating. Burial will follow at St. Benedict’s Cemetery in Nebraska City.
A Rosary will be recited Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, followed by the family greeting friends. Open visitation will be available at Gude Mortuary on Thursday, Jan. 24, after 5 p.m.
