  • Russell Duane Snyder, 87, of Syracuse, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Community Memorial Hospital in Syracuse. He was born on Jan. 11, 1926, in Virginia, Nebraska, to John and Ceola (Lewis) Snyder. Russ grew up on the family farm in rural Virginia and after graduation continued to help his parents with their farming operation. He married his longtime sweetheart Gladys Miller on June 3, 1946, at the Talmage Lutheran Church. Together they raised four sons, Dan, Ken, Mike and Bill. In the early 1950s, Russ invested in the local John Deere Implement Dealership in Syracuse which he owned and operated for 17 years. In 1965, Russ and Gladys moved to the farm to raise and work with their sons. Russ took great pride in his farm. He was a good steward of the land and he loved his cows. Russ spent a lot of quality time with his family on the farm. In 1981, after retiring from farming, he and Gladys enjoyed traveling and relaxing together. Operating the dealership, farming and raising a family kept him busy, however he always made sure to spend time with his family and friends. He was a long time member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. While in business, he kept active with memberships in the Eagles and Elks Clubs, Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department. He was Instrumental in the Construction and Financing of the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center and active in the American Ag Movement. He was honored as an Aksarben Ambassador and received a Farm Family Award. Russ is survived by wife of 66 years, Gladys Snyder, Syracuse; sons, Dan and Kay Snyder, Omaha; Ken and Jan Snyder, Omaha; Mike and Kristi Snyder, Ogallala; Bill Snyder, Omaha; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Wilma Snyder, Liberty; and by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sister-in-law, Melvin and Ena Snyder, and Leonard Snyder; sister, Mabel Trauernicht; and brother-in-law, Logan Emerson. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Syracuse with Rev. Mike Widner officiating. Cindy Post will be the organist. Interment will be in Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse. Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family’s choice.
